ABOUT LHJJA
We are Lionheart Jiu-jitsu Academy. In our acacdemy we’re teaching the art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. It’s an art where the focus lies on bringing an opponent to the ground to control him by pinning techniques and eventually using a submission to end the fight. The sport was birthed in Rio De Janeiro after the local adaptation of the more traditional judo to a more dynamic and pragmatic variation, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. This can be used both in self-defense situations as it can be used in competition of the sport.

Maarten BAUWENS
"the president"
Maarten, founder of Lionheart Jiu-jitsu Academy since 2020, is a black belt under Max Lindblad in the Checkmat lineage. Since starting BJJ in 2013, he has won major titles like the AJP World Pro (2017) and IBJJF Europeans (2020), competing in over 15 countries. After the COVID-19 hiatus, he returned to competition and earned bronze at the IBJJF Europeans 2023. Now, he focuses on teaching his techniques at two academies while staying competitive. Outside BJJ, he enjoys music, movies, powerlifting, and steak.
Jonathan Claeys
"VIce-president HQ"
Jonathan, a black belt in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Ricardo Vieira (Checkmat) and Judo, is a key member of Lionheart HQ. He teaches classes for adults and kids, manages merchandise, and patches gis. As a founding member, Jonathan has been an essential part of Lionheart since its inception. His style combines judo with a playful bottom game, favoring De La Riva and creative submissions. He enjoys dogs, loud music, and protein pancakes.
Andreas de cauwer
"vice president antwerp chapter"
Andreas De Cauwer joined Lionheart HQ in 2021 as a white belt and quickly progressed to blue belt after dominating local competitions. Known for his wrestling and deceptive guard game, he is a challenge for anyone on the mats. In 2024, Andreas partnered with Maarten to establish the Lionheart Antwerp Chapter, leading its successful expansion. He now runs the academy in Antwerp as its right-hand leader. Andreas enjoys playing music, visiting coffee bars with scenic views, and keeping a fresh haircut.
